Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become an important tool in the fight against crime. Crime mapping allows law enforcement and the community at large to better visualize where crimes occur, what type of crimes occur at specific locations, their frequency and proximity to each other, trends over time and future projections.
This “Time of Day Hotspot Map” depicts the areas of high instances of crime with a weighted attribute associated with time of day for each offense. Looking not only at where the crimes take place but also when during the day they occur helps law enforcement to better target resources at high instance periods during the day. The highest number of occurrences happen between 0700 – 0900 in the morning.
